Synopsis:
Against all odds, Meryn Cooper has inherited the crown—and a deadly war. As the Kingdom of Nocturna splinters under the weight of generations of lies, it is up to Meryn, her bonded direwolf Anassa, and their allies to bring the country back from the brink. But the commoners, the Bonded, and the nobles are distrustful of their new queen and Meryn is caught in a deadly game of politics. Meanwhile, Meryn’s beloved younger sister, Saela, is more at risk than ever.

Confusingly, the one person Meryn can trust is Stark Therion—the dark, dangerous Alpha she thought hated her as much as she loathed him. Yet, his loyalty is unshakeable. His presence is intoxicating. And with his guidance, Meryn can seize an unthinkable level of power. With enemies closing in and shadows stirring in her dreams, Meryn stands to lose her kingdom—and her heart.

——

Book two in the Wolves of Ruin finds Meryn stepping into her position as the lost Sturmfrost queen for the first time. Armed with the knowledge of her ancestry and a newfound but uncontrollable power, she lays claim to a title she could have never imagined. Ruling is not as easy as staking ones claim, and there are many among the bonded riders who hate her for who she is and what she has done to the prior monarch. Many of the bonded are filled with mistrust. Further, Meryn stands in opposition to the one she once loved, but who has betrayed her deeply, Killian.

This second book explores the magic system in more depth as Meryn discovers more about her power and the power of the mysterious goddess tears. The world expand beyond the bounds of Nocturna as the characters discover more of Astreona. And as Meryn learns more about the wicked siphons, she comes to understand that all is not as it seems. The world expands beyond anything she ever knew. It’s this world-building that really sucked me in. Getting to discover different landscapes and new characters brings this story together, revealing incredible possibilities for the third book to come.

Let’s also talk about the romance brewing in this second book. The author offers excellent fan service as the relationship between Meryn and Stark develops. Their relationship is powerful and chaotic, yet the power they wield together finds a way to quell the storm raging around them. These two characters come together in more ways than one, a whirling storm of passion and synchronicity as their connection blooms. And for the spice lovers, there’s a lot of it, so watch out! This world is wild and untamed and the characters love hard and live with abandon. When they don’t know if they’ll survive from one minute to the next, there isn’t a moment to waste.

The only thing that stood out in the negative book is the pacing. The beginning is slow and drawn out, often dragging at times. But the rising action and climax are over in the blink of an eye, leaving me a bit dissatisfied as battles seem to be cut short and vengeance isn’t given its due time. Before I knew it, the story was over, and some interesting twists come to light. I’m not sure how things are going to go in book three, but I’ll have to wait with bated breath until the next one.

Happy reading!
