Synopsis:
No war can be fought with clean hands. Not even the ones waged for the right reasons. Not even the ones you win. Tisaanah bargained away her own freedom to save those she left behind in slavery. Now, bound by her blood pact, she must fight the Orders’ war — and Max is determined to protect her at all costs. But when a betrayal tears apart Ara, Max and Tisaanah are pushed into an even bloodier conflict. Tisaanah must gamble with Reshaye’s power to claim an impossible victory. And Max, forced into leadership, must confront everything he hoped to forget: his past, and his own mysterious magic. All the while, darker forces loom — far darker, even, than the Orders’ secrets. As Tisaanah and Max are ensnared in a web of ancient magic and twisted secrets, one question remains: what are they willing to sacrifice for victory? For power? For love?

Continuing in The War of Lost Hearts series, this second book in the series takes everything that was introduced in Daughter of No Worlds to the next level. Tisanaah is called in to fulfill her blood pack and though it will protect those she loves, it doesn’t make what she is required to do any less terrible. Max is at her side the entire time, tethering himself to her through his words when he cannot be physically present. Their relationship is carved deep, their understanding and respect for one another growing exponentially as the series unfolds. Both of them are victims and perpetrators of destruction, but together they hope to forge or find a better world.

What I loved in this story was the introduction of new perspectives that are absolutely mind blowing. There are new characters for the reader to get to know and it absolutely lends a new dimension to this world. Broadbent takes the opportunity in these pages to expand what we know about this world and to turn everything on its head. There are bad ass female characters throughout this story and everyone is morally grey to some degree, which blurs the line between those who are ultimately good and those who are led astray.

Broadbent explores more of the emotional struggles the characters are grappling with. It’s easier to get to know the characters on a more personal level as the books explore their inner turmoil. Not only is their conflict in the wars they are apart of, but they must also learn to make a tough decision when none of the options provide a positive outcome.

This book also introduces the fae in a much more intimate light and I have to say, the chapters from the fae perspective are my absolute favourite. I found the characters to be so unique and interesting. They are engaging in a way that takes this whole story to the next level. Their storylines contain intense political dynamics, forbidden romances, and cutthroat betrayals.

I cannot wait to get started on the third book in the series. I’ve got a few audiobooks lined up, but this one is in the queue. I absolutely need to know how this series ends.

Happy reading!
