Title: The Ballad of Perilous Graves
Author: Alex Jennings
Publisher: Redhook
Publication Date: June 21, 2022
ISBN: 9780759557215
Synopsis:
Nola is a city full of wonders. A place of sky trolleys and dead cabs, where haints dance the night away and Wise Women help keep the order. To those from Away, Nola might seem strange. To Perilous Graves, it’s simply home. Perry knows Nola’s rhythm as intimately as his own heartbeat. So when the city’s Great Magician starts appearing in odd places and essential songs are forgotten, Perry knows trouble is afoot. Nine songs of power have escaped from the piano that maintains the city’s beat, and without them, Nola will fail. Unwilling to watch his home be destroyed, Perry will sacrifice everything to save it. But a storm is brewing, and the Haint of All Haints is awake. Nola’s time might be coming to an end.

It’s rare that I find a book that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get into it. I’m sad to say that The Ballad of Perilous Graves, is one of those books. This one has been sitting in my stack for well over a year, I’m embarrassed to say. The synopsis sounds incredibly intriguing, but this writer and I just didn’t click. Sometimes it’s just not a good fit and this is one of those times.
I wanted to love this book, truly. I only made it through the first handful of chapters (a number of times) before I had to put it down and walk away. For me, this book never took off and swept me away and reading it felt like an elementary school reading assignment that I had to slog through, not because I enjoyed the book choice, but because I had to answer 10 questions on it for homework.
This book has a pretty good rating on Goodreads, so if the synopsis above looks good to you, I’d highly encourage you to check it out. Maybe (hopefully), you’ll enjoy it more than I did. I’d love to hear what you think!
Happy reading!
